Alan R. Phipps
Alan Phipps’ interest in skiing began during the formative years of the sport in Colorado. It was through his efforts that Denver's City Council authorized the creation of the Winter Park Association, a non-profit agency, to operate the ski area independently from the City. He was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the newly created association and maintained that position until he stepped down as chairman on Winter Park's 30th anniversary in 1969.
With Alan’s guidance, hard work and dedication, Winter Park grew into an internationally acclaimed ski resort with 18 chairlifts. In 1950, this once-abandoned mountain park had only three T-bars and four rope tows. For 37 years, he was an active leader in the development of Winter Park programs, including an extensive expansion project, the fostering of slope grooming, the development of a nationally known jumping school and the world's largest handicapped snow sports program.
