Pam Conklin Pettee joined Vail Associates in 1973, the beginning of a period of impressive growth of the Colorado ski areas. She served as chair of the Colorado Ski Country USA public information committee and was a member of the public affairs committee. Some of Pam’s favorite memories and a highlight of her career, was working with President Gerald Ford when he visited Vail. Another major news event happened on Pam’s watch in March of 1976. A malfunction on the gondola that ran from mid-town Vail to the top of the mountain caused two cars to fall from the cable, plummeting to the ground 50 feet below. There were four fatalities and eight were injured. Pam had to organize press conferences, gather all of the information she could, and accommodate television coverage. Pam left Vail in 1977 to become Director of Public Affairs for Colorado Ski Country, USA, becoming a registered lobbyist for Colorado skiing at the State Capitol. She formed her own ski consulting business in 1979, but returned to Colorado Ski Country, USA, as acting director. In demand as a public relations consultant, she established her own consulting firm, with clients including United Airlines, Descente/Jim Mitchell Advertising, Ski Industries America, National Ski Areas Association, Vail, Steamboat Springs, Ski the Rockies, and many others.
