“Through the Lens” Speaker Series Kicks off in 2024!

January 1, 2024 - VAIL, CO. — Our popular "Through the Lens" speaker series is kicking off this January and will run all snow sports season-long. This year, we welcome films, authors, athletes, and more. Join us as we explore the snow sports industry through a different lens. First up, we welcome the all-women ski film “Advice for Girls.”

Our first program for 2024 will be a screening of the popular new ski film, "Advice for Girls."

“Advice for Girls” puts a spotlight on the collective experience of women in the ski industry. The film showcases advice from three generations of women in skiing. Each generation reminds women and girls of all ages that they are worthy of success, allowed to take up space, and are extremely valuable to the ski industry.

With an intersectional cast featuring all types of women – women of color, queer women, women with disabilities, and more – the crew hopes that everyone can find someone in the film to connect to.

In addition, the CSM is excited to welcome Skea for a pop-up shop at our screening. Before and after the film, browse Skea clothing items and join in on a raffle. Skea is designed by women who ski, for women who ski.

Immediately following the film we are hosting a discussion with Juli Young (the first woman ski patroller on Vail Mountain) and Lizzie Seibert (currently on Vail Ski Patrol) to talk about their experience as a woman in the ski industry.

Other Upcoming Through the Lens events:

  • Wednesday, January 24 - John Padilla and Tragedy into Triumph | Tragedy Into Triumph is the 2nd film from Mountain in My Mind. The film features male and female professional skiers and snowboards and their words about mental health in the snow sports industry. This breakthrough film follows in the footsteps of last year's film by interviewing skiers across the “Suicide Belt” in the Rocky Mountain Region of the United States, as well as showcasing their skiing abilities.

The film has one goal: Destigmatize talking about mental health and suicide in the ski industry. For this presentation, John will be joining us virtually to discuss the film and his mission.

  • Wednesday, February 8 - Billy Kidd & Jimmie Heuga - 60th Medal Anniversary | For this special Through the Lens, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of Billy Kidd and Jimmie Heuga becoming the first American men to win Olympic medals in alpine skiing as they won the silver and bronze respectively in the slalom. In addition to celebrating this historical day, we will be premiering Billy Kidd's new Hall of Fame tribute video. Watch this video, with Billy, for the first time ever. This event will take place at the Sebastian in Vail Village.

  • Friday, February 23 - Camp Hale with Flint Whitlock and Eric Miller | Recent authors of "10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale" (Images of America), Flint Whitlock and Eric Miller will join us for a talk about what it was like writing this book and what went into the process behind the scenes. They will share photos and history of the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale. This talk coincides with Vail's Legacy Weekend.

  • Wednesday, March 6 - Cuchara Mountain Park Reopens | Join us with Ken Clayton, on the Board of Directors with Panadero Ski Corporation, as he talks about what it takes to reopen a once-considered abandoned ski area. The original ski area on Baker Mountain closed in 2000 after nearly 20 years of operation and hosting up to 22,000 visitors a year, leaving behind 50 acres of the base area and an abandoned infrastructure including the entirety of Lift 4. Ken will share with us information about the area's re-opening and open the room up to a Q&A.

  • Wednesday, March 13 - Adventures with Dr. Jon Kedrowski | Dr. Jon Kedrowski will discuss exploring the mountains and high mountain lakes of Colorado to excite people about the summer hiking season. His discussion and slideshow will focus on trip planning as well as weather and climate conditions in Colorado for the recreational hiker. They will include information on safety and backcountry preparedness. Jon’s book – Classic Colorado Hikes – will be featured to show the audience some of the best places to explore the high mountains in Colorado. In his book, some of the best lakes, high mountain peaks, swimming spots, and even “Wild Ice” skating will all be part of the journey in this multimedia presentation! In the last 10 minutes of the program, Jon will tease his recent expeditions to both Everest and Winter K2. He will discuss the strategy, risk management, and weather considerations for climbing these 8000m giants and even how you can get involved in visiting the Himalayas and Karakoram with his company, Dr. Jon’s Adventures.
