Colorado Snowsports Museum Unveils New Exhibits Celebrating Legendary Filmmaker Warren Miller & Their 50th Anniversary
Debuting at a private event on March 27 and reopening to the public on May 15, Warren Miller: Freedom Found offers an immersive look at Warren Miller’s remarkable career, from his early days capturing ski adventures on film to building a global phenomenon that inspired millions to embrace the mountains. Through film footage, vintage posters, personal artifacts, and behind-the-scenes stories, visitors will gain insight into how Miller’s humor, storytelling, and passion shaped the evolution of ski media and mountain lifestyle.
“One thing we’re hearing often with the debut of the exhibit is – ‘I didn’t know that!’,” said Dana Zapfel, the Museum’s curator and director of collections. “This exhibit celebrates some of the lesser-known sides of Warren -as an artist and veteran- and brings his achievements to life through many artifacts that have not been on display before.”
Highlights of the exhibit include:
- Rare and iconic film clips spanning Miller’s decades-long career, including the debut of his new Hall of Fame tribute video
- Original artwork and promotional materials from early film tours
- Personal items and memorabilia that reveal the man behind the camera
- Newly acquired artifacts from the Gary Nate Collection, Miller’s lead cameraman
When asking Jen Mason, Executive Director of the CSM, what her favorite artifact on display is, she points out Warren Miller’s 16mm Bell & Howell camera. On the back, Warren taped a piece of paper with a list of reminders. It’s the personal touches on some of the artifacts that make this collection so interesting.

The exhibit also explores Miller’s service as a veteran and his connections to Colorado, where many of his films were shot and where his legacy continues to resonate strongly within the snow sports community. To some visitors’ surprise, Miller even lived in Vail, Colorado.
The Colorado Snowsports Museum invites visitors of all ages, from lifelong skiers to newcomers, to experience the stories, humor, and adventurous spirit that made Warren Miller a household name.

In addition, the Museum debuted an exhibit dedicated to our 50th anniversary, Celebrating 50 Years of Snowsports. Here you learn about the early days of the Vail area, the museum’s founding, and look back at past exhibitions. An interactive element invites you to share your memories and favorite stories about the Colorado Snowsports Museum as we reflect on 50 years.
